The Survey Report on the Hiring and Application of Youth with Overseas Experience has been published (commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and examined by JAOS Japanese Association of Overseas Study, Heisei 25 fiscal year). It was distributed to GLOBAL ACE council member organizations, chambers of commerce and industry, Hello Work public employment security offices and other organizations nationwide.
Tobitate! Ryugaku Japan

At the request of the promotion team from Tobitate! Ryugaku Japan, a project led by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Secretary General Hoshino held a Q&A and discussion session about overseas study trends and future activities to promote overseas study at the education ministry offices.
Collaboration with Risk Management Seminar Sponsored by AIU

JAOS cooperated with the Risk Management Seminar sponsored by AIU for agents working with international students and working holidaymakers. The seminar dealt with practical matters such as risks and responses to accidents etc. that occur while studying abroad, how to respond in situations such as large-scale natural disasters like the earthquake that occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand, and cooperative frameworks for insurance companies and overseas study agents.
Continuing to Implement GLOBAL ACE, a Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Commissioned Project

Following on from last fiscal year, we are again implementing the Global ACE project. Initiated by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Global Action for Careers and Employability Cooperation Division, this project support career-building for working youth through the utilization of international exchange during the Heisei 26 fiscal year. We will continue to provide a system of coherent career-building support that extends from the pre-travel stage through to post-return to Japan, enabling youth with experience in overseas internships and working holidays, internships and volunteering to find positions based on their overseas experience.
JAOS Participation in the Tobitate! Ryugaku Japan Matching Event

JAOS members took part in an event targeting students for “Tobitate! Ryugaku Japan: A Public and Private Study Abroad Support System,” which is supported by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Japan Student Services Association, and a number of private companies. The event sought to match students with twenty-seven organizations such as agents for overseas study who offer information about practical activities including internships and volunteer work available overseas, by providing information to university students who wish to participate in the “Tobitate! Ryugaku Japan Representative Program (scholarship).”
The 16th JAOS Counselor Certification Test

The 16th JAOS Counselor Certification Test was held. Due to an increase in the number of examinees, it was decided that the spring test should also be held in Osaka from this time onwards. Due to the increase in the number of certified counselors gaining qualifications since the end of last year, referral examinations have been implemented. Targeting staff decided by each organization, these ascertain whether the applicant’s credentials are sufficient in order to become overseas counselors.
FELCA Asia General Meeting

FELCA’s (The Federation of Education and Language Consultant Associations) regular general meeting for the Asia region was held in Taipei, Taiwan, a country that became a FELCA member last year. Taking part from JAOS, which represents Japan, were Chairmant Mr. Yamada, Managing Director Ryuki Hayashi, Director Yoshio Ono, and Director Yoshikazu Ueoku. An active and proactive exchange of opinions took place on Asian and world trends in overseas study, and the enhancement of the reception environment for overseas students.
17th Foreign Government Educational Representative Meeting（JAOS/FGER Meeting）

The JAOS/FGER (Foreign Government Educational Representative) meeting was held for the 17th time. FGERs reported on overseas study trends and their activities in the year while JAOS member organizations also reported on overseas study trends. The JAOS Japan Association of Overseas Studies presented their report, which led to active exchange of informationand perspectives. Participants included 23 organizations(24 individuals) from JAOS, 10 organizations (11 individuals) from the FGER side (the Embassy of the United States Department of Commerce, Embassy of the United States of America Public Affaires Section, Fulbright Japan, the Embassy of Canada in Japan, the Australian Embassy Marketing Office, the Japan Offices of the Western Australian Government,Trade&Investment Queensland Japan Office, the government of Victoria, the British Council, the New Zealand Embassy) and one observer, making a total of 46 attendees.
Korea Overseas Study Agent Association Annual General Meeting

JAOS Chairman, Mr. Masaru Yamada, and Secretary General, Mr. Tatsuhiko Hoshino attended the Korea Overseas Study Agent Association (KOSA) annual meeting. Mr. Yamada presented on issues such as industry trends in Japan and the future of exchange for our association, which bridges Korea and Japan.
2010 JAOS Autumn General Meeting

32 participants, representing 26 JAOS member organizations (14 of which were present by proxy) attended the JAOS Autumn General Meeting. Each task team provided updates on their activities and laid out their upcoming plans. Importantly, with the cooperation of the Consumer Agency, CIEL (Council of International Education and Language Travel, Japan) and Ryukgaku Kyokai, task teams reported their progress regarding the provisionally-titled ‘Overseas Study Service Review’. This focuses on the societal repercussions of bankruptcies and similar problems involving study abroad businesses. It was announced that within the fiscal year, a plan should be implemented that creates an approved mechanism (criteria and framework) for financial screening. A lively discussion ensued. Moreover, our Administrative Office affirmed our participation in the the ‘Global Japan Initiative Project’. As the velocity of globalization continues to increase, from all quarters, we have received a variety of proposals regarding the stimulation of outbound study abroad activities. However, it is only the ‘GJI Project’ that aims to become a functionary platform for increasing outbound students, formulate a study abroad strategy for all of Japan, activate the study abroad industry and widen the market. In addition, this project has resolved to include members from outside of JAOS. In other business, the ‘JapaNext project’ that JAOS approved in the spring of 2010 has continued to take form. This fiscal year, it has been officially confirmed that three advisory committees based on the 3 pillars of study abroad will be set in place: the ‘Outbound Study Abroad’ Committee, the ‘Inbound Study Abroad’ Committee and the ‘Job Support’ Committee (Job support for international students). Lastly, next year (2011) marks the 20th anniversary of JAOS’ foundation. To commemorate the occasion, JAOS has decided to create a ’20th Anniversary Special Event Committee’.
