May 22,2023

“In 2022, Significant Increase in Japanese Overseas Students, with Canada as the Most Popular Study Destination”

JAOS aims to promote the healthy development of the study abroad industry and provide instruction and guidance to improve and maintain quality of service providers in Japan. JAOS consists of 64 private and public-sector organizations based in Japan.
In April 2023, JAOS organized the “JAOS 2022 Survey on the Number of Japanese Studying Abroad”, a data analysis of 40-member education agencies that provide study abroad services. The survey collected from these 40 organizations demonstrates the trend of the number of Japanese who used their study abroad support services.

The survey was answered by all of 40-member organizations, and it reported 34,304 (including online study abroad) students studying abroad in 2022. . Furthermore, compared to the previous year, the number of online study abroad participants had decreased by half, while the traditional method of traveling abroad for study (offline study abroad) had increased by more than five times. It was also evident that among the countries chosen as study destinations, Canada had the highest number of Japanese overseas students.
