Survey on the Status of Japanese Studying Abroad by 36 Study Abroad Agencies

November 16, 2016

Japan Association of Overseas Studies (JAOS President, Yasuo Sone, hereinafter “JAOS”) composed of more than 65 study abroad agencies and related businesses, conducted a survey of 36 “JAOS” member companies called “Survey on the Status of Japanese Studying Abroad by 36 Study Abroad Agencies”, in cooperation with the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), in January 2016.

As a result, a large discrepancy was discovered between the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s official figure of 55,350 “Japanese studying abroad” (March 2016), and new data revealing that an additional 64,988 Japanese students (mostly non-duplicated) had studied overseas. The statistics from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology only reflect the number of Japanese students studying at overseas higher education institutions, and do not include figures for language schools, which actually compose the highest percentage of Japanese students studying overseas. Hence, this survey was undertaken to more accurately calculate the number of Japanese students studying abroad.
